Here's some more Ben Affleck love for you. Not only is his second directorial effort, The Town, coming out in 2010, but Matt Damon's better half also has a corporate downsizing drama on the release schedule as well.
My initial thought was, "Wow, that's a lot of Oscar winners in one movie". The story doesn't look groundbreaking, but still gripping enough to draw me in. The trailer for The Company Men kind of reminds me of a combination of In Good Company, Up in the Air, with a little Good Will Hunting thrown in, which works for me.
While I'm a big Affleck fan, his go-to Boston accent is starting to wear a little thin, and I just want to see him in a role where he's just using his normal voice. Accent aside, The Company Men looks like it's in Ben's wheelhouse. He tends to do better with intimate dramas instead of comedies and action films, which are harder to pull off to begin with.
I don't know if The Company Men will be a big player come awards season, but the cast and premise has an Oscar-bait feel to them. Once again, I hope critics and audiences are able to cut Affleck a break and let his current works stand on their own, and they leave their biases at home. It looks like 2010 could be a big year for Ben *fingers crossed*.
