Right after college football season, the Oscar season is my second favorite time of the year. For the last couple of years, I've made my own Oscar predictions, but it wasn't until maybe 2 years ago that I really started doing some research for my picks. This is the first year, that I've really paid attention to all of the precursors that are supposed to "predict" the Oscar noms.
It's fun ready blogs and websites about which movie should be in the Best Picture category, and whom should be nominated for Best Actor, Actress, etc. The one thing that's started to irk me though is all of this clamor for The Dark Knight. Now, TDK was a very, very, very good movie, but I personally think it's overrated. There, I said it!
I seriously doubt that Knight was the best picture this year, and I don't even think it was the best superhero movie; that will always be Ironman in my mind. Now, I know that pigeon-holing TDK as a "superhero" movie might be a bit shortsighted, but at its core that is what it is. Is it better than most in the genre, definitely. Does in transcend the genre, maybe. But the superhero bias that it's garnering by the precursors is waranted because it's a movie about a superhero damnit!
I'm willing to give into the hype in regards to Heath Ledger, but there's a part of me that thinks he's getting all of this attention because of his untimely death. Ledger's story is a tragic one, but I'd rather have him alive without a nom than a posthumous award. In the end, I'm pretty sure he'll sweep his category across the board, but I wish it was on the merit of THIS performance rather than it being a Lifetime Achievement award.
The Oscars are still a ways off, but they'll be here before we know it, and I really need to get my butt in gear and start catching some of the movies with the most buzz. I'm really excited to see Milk, Frost/Nixon, Slumdog Millionaire, and Doubt to a lesser extent. Other movies that I'd like to catch before the big night: The Wrestler, Revolutionary Road, and I still need to watch Burn After Reading. Ones that I'm not too excited about: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Seven Pounds (probably out of the running at this point).
Regardless, I'm excited for Awards Season even though this year's crop seems pretty weak on the surface.
